THE SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL opens its 51st year after last year’s glorious golden anniversary, in which it was the first film festival in the Americas to reach the half-century milestone. This year the Festival once again sports an excellent array of films from around the globe and a broad range of accompanying festivities, reaffirming that, when it comes to cinema as well so much else, the Bay Area is the West Coast’s gateway to the world.
SFIFF51 opens April 24th and runs through May 8th, with nearly 200 films from 49 countries, including eight world premieres, two international premieres, eight North American premieres, seven U.S. premieres and 32 West Coast premieres.
The Peter J. Owens Award, honoring an actor whose work exemplifies brilliance, independence and integrity, will be given to actress Maria Bello, who will be on hand at the Castro on Friday, May 2nd, at 7:00 pm for an onstage interview, retrospective film clips and a screening of Udayan Prasad’s new soulful Southern tale of love, loss and redemption, THE YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF, in which Bello delivers a luminous turn opposite costar William Hurt.

ACTRESS Maria Bello had a few days off from filming on location in Connecticut. She decided she wanted to help Sen. Barack Obama more than she needed to rest.

They immediately went to work on the campaign, and by Sunday, they had canvassed the town: They stumped for the Illinois senator at a coffee shop, the train depot, on street corners and in schools.
