Maria Bello And Abigal Breslin Fall For The Falls
February 19th, 2009 Filed Under Films, Site News No Comments / Comment?

Thanks to Alex for the news

Abigail Breslin may have finally found the role that will help her transition from adorable-kid roles to a more adult movie career. She’s signed on to star along with Maria Bello in The Falls, an adaptation of the Joyce Carol Oates novel Rape: A Love Story. Yes, it’s about as controversial as the title suggests.

Production Weekly reported the news in this week’s issue as well as their Twitter feed. Samuel L. Jackson will also be part of the film, though it’s unclear which part he’ll play. Bello will star as Teena Maguire, a woman who is attacked and raped while walking through a park with her daughter Bethie (Breslin). Teena names her assailants, who turn out to be men from the neighborhood, and is harassed for her trouble. My money would be on Jackson for the role of “their unexpected, silent champion, a man who knows the meaning of justice. And love.”

IM Global Acclaim seals 26 presales on Miller’s Pippa Lee
February 13th, 2009 Filed Under The Private Lives of Pippa Lee No Comments / Comment?

As US specialty buyers prepare for the world premiere of Rebecca Miller’s official selection comedy drama The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee on February 9, IM Global Acclaim has reported strong international sales. Icon has taken rights for the UK, Australia and New Zealand, Tri Pictures has acquired in Spain, CDI in Italy, CP Digital in Russia, Playarte in Brazil, RCV in the Benelux, Ablo for Eastern Europe, Forum in Israel and Maple in Canada.

In total 26 territories have pre-sold on the picture, based on Miller’s own novel about a former wild child whose serene existence is threatened after her elderly husband has an affair. Robin Wright Penn, Keanu Reeves, Alan Arkin, Julianne Moore, Winona Ryder, Blake Lively, Maria Bello and Monica Bellucci star. Brad Pitt’s Plan B produced.

“The buzz is already out there on the movie and the pre-sales tally is reassuring,” IM Global CEO Stuart Ford said. “Hopefully we’ll finish the job after the film screens here in Berlin. It deserves this kind of large scale platform.”

First 2 reviews of ‘Pippa Lee’

An Elevation Filmworks production in co-production with Plan B Entertainment. (International sales: IM Global, Los Angeles.) Executive producers, Jean Luc De Fanti, Jeff Sagansky, Brad Pitt. Produced by Lemore Syvan, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner. Directed, written by Rebecca Miller.

With: Robin Wright Penn, Keanu Reeves, Julianne Moore, Alan Arkin, Winona Ryder, Maria Bello, Monica Bellucci, Zoe Kazan, Ryan McDonald, Blake Lively, Robin Weigert.

Cardboard characters and severe problems of tone fatally flaw the awkward satirical relationship drama “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.” Fourth feature from helmer-writer Rebecca Miller (“The Ballad of Jack and Rose,” “Personal Velocity,” “Angela”) feels as schizophrenic as its eponymous heroine. “Reinvented” from Miller’s own novel, this star-studded tale of a 50ish married woman coming to terms with her troubled past reps something of a pig-in-a-poke for buyers who nabbed presales rights. While watchable, it’s not exactly a commercial property or, for that matter, arthouse material, and thus reps a marketing challenge unlikely to receive critical support.
